I went to Portland for 4 days last week. Before I went there, I was excited because Oregon has no tax. Wow! Actually, after I arrived at Oregon, I had a good time.
Powell's was very big and had a lot of books in it. The amount of books surprised me very much. I like to read books, so I wanted to live there. The basketball game was very exciting. It was the first time to see a basketball game for me, so I enjoyed the atmosphere of it. At first team Portland lost, but finally they won as a result of the hard- fight. I was shouting all over the game. Multhomah Falls was beautiful. Despite the bad weather, almost all of students took a hike to the top of the falls. Of course, I joined. On the way to the top, I drank water of the falls. It was cold and delicious. Shopping at Pioneer Square Center was a wonderful time. There were many shops in the center, so I wasn't bored. We were allowed to have a long, free time, it was the first time, and enjoyed shoppingfor all our wants. I was surprised at many fashionable people who walked in the center. It seems a usual thing in Japan, but their fashion were too different from Spokane citizens.
I could enjoy this trip even only their plans, however the most useful experience was university visit. I went to Whitman on the first day. This university had a Japanese class. I could make a conversation and explained about my presentation topic to one of the students. My partner studied Japanese only 2 years but surprisingly, he could understand my Japanese well. It was the first time to talk with a foreigner who studies Japanese. It was interesting to teach him about Japanese culture. When I teach Japanese culture to elementary school students, I always use origami or some Japanese toys. They can play and feel Japan, but it was not so interesting because children don't try to understand our culture deeply. My partner was interested in Japan very much and I felt that he tried to learn more about Japan from me. Actually, he talked in Japanese as much as he could in the class. This university visit became a good experience for me.
