During the South West tour, we visited the Pueblo called Acoma Indian village.
I was so excited to meet them because in class I was amazed by their lifestyle especially
about food and religion. How did they develop such customs? I didn’t understand why
they have a special room for religious rituals, so Acoma Pueblo Indians are full of
mystery for me. The most impressive thing about them was that they are keeping their traditions alive even today. I wouldn’t have imagined it. Although they live in the modern world, they still live following their traditional ways, so I had exaggerated expectations and images of them when we met them. Although some still live there, others have another house off the reservation. Acoma students said the Sky City is for religious rituals. Even though they have a native language now most people, especially young people, speak English. They make a point of keeping their Native American culture, even as they merge into American society!
I wondered if there are a lot of people who are Native American or their origin is Native American. I asked my RA about it, and she told me fascinating information about Indians. Surprisingly, Washington State has a lot of native tribes, mostly near Seattle, where there are 24 tribes. I didn’t know about their lifestyle, but it’s true that they keep their history. The name of the city, Spokane, is a Native American name. I didn’t know that even though I’m studying in Spokane. Not only Spokane, but there are a lot of cities named after Indians. Because of this, people from other states can’t pronounce these cities correctly.
If I have a chance, I want to visit their tribes, and I want to learn about them, but I already knew they have a sad history. Because of other country’s aggression, they lost their own land, so if I ask someone about it, I have to consider that.
