Why Are American Desserts So Sweet?

Whenever I eat some cake or another dessert, I always think it’s so sweet. When it was my friend’s birthday, our group ate a big birthday cake. It looked really gorgeous, but it was too sweet. I could only eat one piece of cake. The whipped cream was especially sweet, and I thought it was almost like eating pure sugar. I was surprised. I feel that not only that cake but also other desserts in America are very sweet, so I wondered, why are American desserts so sweet. I want to compare desserts in Japan with desserts in the States.

In Japan, desserts aren’t so sweet. I think Japanese people always want desserts which are delicious and healthy. They take special care of their body and their health. That means the desserts is made without using so much sugar. It’s well-known that Japanese food is the healthiest in the world, so I think desserts are also healthy. We often make cakes using fruit instead of using sugar, so it isn’t so sweet.

But how about salt? I think that there are a lot of dishes using salt in Japan. Japanese people like the taste of salt more than sugar, so they tend to cook with salt instead of sugar. American people don’t use salt so much compared with Japanese people.

In conclusion, I had thought that American people don’t take care of their bodies and their health, but now I think that opinion is wrong. Of course, Japanese food is very healthy, and Japanese people take care of their health. It seems the most important reason is that the difference is in the amount of sugar and salt used by each culture. These differences in culture are very interesting.

Ha! Yuki, this thing about American desserts always makes me laugh because I usually hear it from Japanese students who are eating, and eating, and eating the sweet desserts. You're right, though, American food is really, really sweet! Good writing!
