Don't Americans Get Cold?

I see most American people wearing t- shirts or tank tops when it’s cold. I am amazed!! I wonder whether they are cold or not. I feel cold, because I can’t stand the cold when I saw them. Now, the weather is a little cold especially in the morning and evening in Spokane. I usually wear long- sleeves in Spokane. Other Mukogawa students wear long- sleeves also. However, our RAs, teachers, and many local people wear summer clothes. Although the weather is still warm in the afternoon, I can’t understand why they wear t-shirts or tank tops in the morning and in the evening.

When I came here in February, it was so cold and there was a lot of snow. My RA, Sara, wore only long- sleeves. All my group members wore down jackets, so we were very surprised!! I asked Sara,”Aren’t you cold?” She said, “I’m OK!” I asked, “Do American people wear down jackets?” Sara said, “Most people don’t wear down jackets. We are used to cold weather.” I was convinced by her explanation. The weather certainly is warmer in Washington than in my home town, it hasn’t snowed recently in my home town, but I still need a coat.
I think people are able to stand the cold in winter according to their life style. American people often use cars , so they don’t walk outside. University students have cars too, so they don’t walk outside either. In Japan, most university students and office workers use public transportation, so we have to walk outside, and, therefore, we need to wear jackets. Being able to stand the cold in winter doesn’t depend on where people live or whether they like or dislike winter. I don’t like cold weather, but I do like to wear cute coats or jackets, so I like winter. Now I’m accustomed to seeing Americans wear t-shirts or tank tops when it’s cold.

In conclusion, American and Japanese seem to feel the cold differently. I can’t wear summer clothes when it’s cold outside in Japan, but if I live in America, I could wear t-shirts or tank tops when it’s cold. Now I’m living in Spokane, I think I have started to get used to cold weather. However, I still don't like the cold!

Hi, Kanako! When I came to America for the first time, I really think so, too! I was surprised!!! Why do American wear T-shirt, they don't feel cold? so your essay is very interesting for me. Which do you like summer or winter?:) I like winter because I can't endure very hot!!!

Actually Kanako, sometimes I look out my window in the winter and see kids waiting in the snow wearing shorts and t-shirts and I wonder the same thing: 'Aren't they COLD?' I think those kids must do it because their schools are kept really warm. I asked my kids why they don't wear warm coats in the winter and they said it's because their school is really HOT and they don't want to carry their coats around all day from class to class.

People are so flexible, aren't they? I'd like to think about this question from the oposite side. I think Spokane people can't stand Japanese summer. We also can't stand it, but we get used to Japanese summer, Osaka summer! Sometimes, Osaka is the hottest city, but some women wear long-sleeves because they don't want to get tunning. If I see them, I have an idea, but Spokane people think,"They will die of heat!"
